Islay is more than just an Island. It’s a style, a flavour, an ideal, a destination steeped in history and folklore and a nirvana for fans of the smokier style of Scotch malt whisky.
The Big Smoke Heavily Peated was created to blend single malt whiskies from some of the Scotland’s most iconic distilleries, selecting only the smokiest whiskies to put into one bottle. Intentionally bottling them in its most rugged form, this whisky is reminiscent of traditional Islay malts; full of peat smoke and coastal sweetness, powerful yet caressing. Very reminiscent of gutsy young Ardbegs.
The previous bottlings, in the old packaging were at 46% but this new look launched in Summer 2022 has this beautiful dram bottled at power packed 50%.
Nose: Neck pours need a bit of space to breathe but when it does, this gorgeous blast of Islay styled peat comes. Salty seaweed and ocean smells, with buttery green fruits, especially crisp green apples, pears, candied citrus and smoky bacon.
Palate: Bright and salty initially, ashy peat, creamy mouthfeel, sweet vanilla and more barbecued fruits. As you sip on, the peat smoke builds on you. Nothing timid about this whisky.
Finish: Touch of vanilla and warming spice, more peat follows and a pleasing residual sweetness.
