Sazerac Rye Whiskey

45% | 75cl | Rye Whiskey | American Whiskey

Sazerac Rye Whiskey symbolises the tradition and history of New Orleans. Rye whiskey dates back to the 1800s, around the time when saloons, veiled as Coffee Houses, began lining the streets of New Orleans. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye Whiskey and Peychaud’s Bitters. The libation became known as the “Sazerac” and America’s first branded cocktail was born. This is the whiskey that started it all.

TASTING NOTES

The Sazerac cocktail is a classic cocktail that is very close similar to the Old Fashioned cocktail. The Sazerac cocktail has reportedly been consumed in some form as far back as 1838, with the cocktail itself becoming trademarked in 1900 by the Sazerac Company.

Both the Sazerac and the Old Fashioned are based on a balance of whiskey, sugar, and bitters. However, they begin to diverge with the primary spirit. The Old Fashioned is known to traditionally use bourbon as its base, while the modern Sazerac starts with rye whiskey. Bourbon tends to be sweeter, while the rye offers a more peppery profile.

SAZERAC COCKTAIL RECIPE :

  • 1 sugar cube
  • 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 2 ounces Sazerac Rye Whiskey
  • 1/4 ounce absinthe, or anise liqueur
  • Lemon twist, for garnish
  1. Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling it with ice. Let it sit while you prepare the rest of the drink.
  2. In a mixing glass, soak 1 sugar cube with 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters and muddle to crush the cube.
  3. Add 2 ounces Sazerac Rye and stir.
  4. Discard the ice in the chilled glass. Pour 1/4 ounce absinthe, or anise liqueur in the glass, swirl it around, then discard the liquid.
  5. Pour the whiskey mixture into the absinthe-rinsed glass.
  6. Gently squeeze the lemon twist over the drink to release its essence. Traditionalists typically discard it and rarely drop it into the glass; lay it on the rim as a garnish if you like. Serve and enjoy.
