Chad, John, Shekar, Lynette, David, Su Ming: these are but a handful of my friendsthat have been to Langkawi since the travel bubble opened — and they’re not the only ones. But instead of just vicariously living through Instagram, I decided to put my time to good use by creating a list of my favourite whiskies for a beach-side holiday.
At the top is Bunnahabhain — whether it’s an independent or official bottling, whiskies from this distillery are the perfect maritime choice because of their beautiful briny notes that layer over their sweet, nutty characters. If I had to pick two, I’d go with either the Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair or Bunnahabhain 2008 11 Year Old Manzanilla — the Stiureadair is a good introduction that can be drunk all day, while the Manzanilla is a rich, toffee-laden dram that’s best enjoyed at night.
Nothing says more beach to me than coconuts and a piña colada. The two whiskies that spring to mind are our new Black Bull Ltd Ed 10 Year Old Rum Cask, which aren’t shy about their coconut-like aromas. For something less overtly coconut on the nose, I’d suggest the Arran Quarter Cask, The Bothy — the coconut oil-like notes come through on its long finish!
Not all the best beaches are in the tropics; some of the most beautiful beaches I have been on are in Scotland, where icy cold winds bring their own invigorating joy. I have some amazing memories sipping Kilchoman Machir Bay on Machir Bay Beach (yes, Machir Bay is a real beach) as the wild Islay winds and sea-spray blew across.
Another unforgettable Scottish seaside memory is eating seafood at Café Fish, located at the Tobermory pier on the Isle of Mull. Here, freshly caught lobsters, crayfish, mussels, and fish are beautifully prepared with little fanfare. And when paired with a whisky like the Tobermory 23 Year Old, a simple seaside meal is turned into a feast that will floor any Michelin-starred chef.
